Painters Who Read the Wall First

Ambrozia-avl is an exterior painting outfit working across Long Beach, from the bungalow streets in Belmont Heights and Rose Park out to the post-war stucco tracts on the east side. We are on Clark Ave in the 90806 ZIP, and most of our year is exterior repaints and the preparation that goes under them.

We took the coastal side of this trade seriously after enough repeat visits to houses that had been painted well and still looked tired at year six. The paint was not the problem. Salt was. It settles out of the marine layer overnight, holds moisture against the wall past mid morning, and then the afternoon sun works on whatever the salt has already loosened. Two houses a mile apart, same product, same crew, and one of them ages years faster.

So our estimates start with the wall rather than the square footage. Which elevation faces west. How far the house sits from open water. Whether the stucco is crazed or genuinely cracked. Whether a bungalow built in the 1920s has bare wood under three generations of coating, which changes both the primer and the way dust has to be handled.

How We Work

• Preparation is the quote. Washing, scraping, sanding, spot priming and caulking are where the money and the durability both live. We show that on the estimate rather than hiding it inside a headline number.
• Two coats on a colour change. One coat looks acceptable on the day and patchy in raking light six months later.
• We measure the surface, not the calendar. In a heavy marine layer we start when the wall is above dew point and dry, which through June and July can mean a later start and a shorter day.
• Lead safe on pre-1978 housing. Containment, wet methods and proper clean up. Older houses are normal work here, they just need the right handling.
• Local and insured. A real person answers the phone, and it is usually the person who will walk the house with you.
